As with the other works in the ‘extraction’ series, this drawing of Varoufakis feels alive with a steadfast refusal to be quiet. A drawing that seems to have outgrown its own paper, the figure straining against the edges as if the intensity of thought can no longer be contained on the small sheet. The hands read as both protective, as if holding something close, and resigned (the posture of someone who has carried the same argument for years and knows how much it weighs). The cross-hatching is ferocious in places, almost blacking out the lower half, yet the face remains luminous, pale against the storm, still visible, still speaking.
