With me someone there with me 2026

With me someone there with me 2026 – 30 x 24cm, acrylic on canvas

The title is Beckett’s — from Company, that late prose text in which a voice speaks in the dark to a figure lying on its back, offering the possibility of presence, of not being alone. Someone there. With me.

The painting is dark. Not atmospherically dark but absolutely dark. The upper zone a field in which flowers exist at varying distances, close and far, their colours the only light available. They are there. They glow. They constitute, by their presence, a form of company.

Whether that is sufficient is what the painting refuses to resolve.

A ridge of heavily built matter divides the dark world from what lies beneath it, the cross-section, the substrate, the warm interior of the ground through which something has recently moved, its trace still visible, still luminous. Below that, the pale geometry of the container’s lower vocabulary: clean, administrative, indifferent.

Three worlds, stacked. None of them speaking to the others. The flowers in the dark at the top, glowing in the only register available to them, offering what company they can.

Someone there.
