All of the UK’s 12 deregulated Freeports are housed in much larger Special Economic Zones (SEZs) of which there are 74 in total. SEZs are expansionist by nature, the point many people are missing is that the SEZ model is a neocolonialist one, Sunak studied at Stanford Uni, his mentor was Prof. Paul Romer who advocated deregulated SEZs as a second empire of nation-building.
SEZs flourished after the 2008 financial crash, right-wing libertarians saw the potential for carving up countries into patchworks of corporate sovereignties, this ties into the ethos that ‘localised freedoms’ are the best way to dismantle big govt by handing powers over to corporations who under Adam Smith’s ‘invisble hand’ are trusted to ‘self-regulate’ inside the free zones. Companies inside the zones can then ‘rescue’ democracy from its failures under a laissez-faire corporate political model. UK SEZs contravene EU laws on State aid, Brexit turbocharged the resurrection of Thatcher’s SEZs because they ran into EU rules on State aid.
Anyone who says UK SEZs and Freeports have nothing to do with Brexit are lying to you.
