The warm brown field in this painting is simultaneously soil, ground, flower bed, and displacement force, it is not passive. It moves. The diagonal cutting from upper left to lower right divides the canvas into the dark upper world and the brown lower world, and the brown is pressing upward into the dark, or the dark is pressing downward into the brown, and the flowers exist at the boundary between these two pressures without belonging fully to either. They are being pushed out of the brown even as the brown is what should sustain them.
