The eyes don’t close, even in the dark canopy, even under the weight of what’s pressing down from above. Now they can discern membrane after membrane doing the quiet work that colour alone used to seem to do.
Below the threshold strip, structure gives way to something older and less named, growth without edges, root or current or nerve, hard to say anymore where one ends and the water begins.
