The roots came first. Made quickly, with force, the underground system laid down before there was anything above it to justify the effort. This is the order things actually happen in, before representation intervenes.
Above the threshold, centuries of looking: the botanical record, the Enlightenment project of naming and classifying what grows, rendered here as recollection rather than document.
The blue black carves out a silhouette making space for what it surrounds rather than asserting itself. Out of that darkness, the flowers emerge, not triumphant, not symbolic, just present, the way things are present before they are named.
And then, at the end of all this, the little tune. The thing that was playing underneath the whole time.
