The stem doesn’t rise straight. It bends back on itself before climbing on, the shape of something that had to work for whatever distance it’s covered. Grief and joy were never going to arrive separately. They come folded into the same kinked, insistent green, reaching up past a slab of its own fading outline, toward whatever’s left to be joyous about.
