As a stone against the sky 2026

As a stone against the sky 2026 – 99 x 79cm, oil, acrylic, spray paint, wire, canvas

The condition of the thing that is simply there, present against the vastness behind it, without explanation or purpose beyond its own existence. The painting knows this about itself: it is a fragment of a larger canvas, recovered, threaded with wire at its upper edge, suspended against the wall by its own infrastructure. The stone held against the sky by the material of its own making.

The hybrid form at the centre is a rotted desert plant in the process of transformation, its fibrous interior visible through the decomposing outer form, becoming simultaneously a world globe, a lamp, something between the organic and the domestic that has no stable name. The inside is becoming visible as the outside fails. The structure of the living thing reveals itself through its own decay.

The wire at the top suspends the remnant. The stone against the sky, held there by its own history, undergoing its transformation in warm ground, becoming whatever it is becoming, without audience and without destination.
