Deregulated Special Economic Zones and Freeports carve out entire regions of a host country where corporations are handed governance powers under relaxed laws and regulations, including decades-long corporate tax breaks and licenses. When a country’s economy is in such a mess, corporations and govts work together to ‘rescue’ democracy from its failings, this involves privatising all public services, and asset stripping councils and businesses en masse, compulsory purchase orders are common procedures of SEZs that apply to business, agricultural, and residential properties.
